Strengthen Your Neck – Safely

Chin Tuck

People of a certain age can strengthen their necks safely using gentle isometric exercises and chin tucks.  These exercises build deep muscle support without putting heavy stress on the cervical joints.

Chin Tucks.   Sit or stand tall with shoulders relaxed.  Slide your head straight back as if making a double chin, keeping your chin level.  Hold for 3–5 sec. and release.  Repeat 8–15 times to engage deep neck flexors.

Isometric Forward Press.   Sit upright.  Place your palm against your forehead and gently pushy our head forward against your hand without letting your head move.  Hold for 5 sec,, then relax.

Isometric Side Press.   Place your palm against your temple or the side of your head.  Press your head into your hand while resisting with your hand so your head doesn’t move.  Hold for 6 sec. and switch sides.

Here are two stretches that can be done even while waiting for the light to turn green.

Side Neck Stretch

Head Turns.   Slowly turn your head to look over one shoulder, hold for a few seconds, and return to the center before switching sides.

Side Neck Stretch.   Sit upright and slowly lower your ear toward your shoulder until you feel a light stretch.  Hold for 15–30 sec. without raising your shoulder.

It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before beginning new exercises.  And for heavens sake – stop – if you experience pain or dizziness.
