CEA Turtle Season June 2016

The end of June has brought the Blancas/Greens!!  These mommas love to move around on the beaches, so please remember to keep all obstructions off the beaches at dark.  This year we have seen a turtle under a large umbrella pole, turtles under lounge chairs, turtles running into kayaks, and turtles leaving the beach without nesting due to not enough free room.  These mommas like to wander around on the beach for hours at times, so please beachfront owners, keep you obstacles picked up at night.

The end of June also brought our first hatchlings – the first were on Half Moon Bay.  ¡Bienvenidos y viaje seguro!! Some reminders for hatchling season:  NO TOCAR-NO TOUCHING!! Stay off the beaches at night so not to harm them. Hatchlings as well as adults are protected by the Federal Government and interference is punishable under Mexican law.  CEA wants to keep the hatchling process as natural as possible, but mother nature does at times create challenges which may make it necessary to hold the babies until a safer time for release.  Only licensed CEA personnel are allowed to touch, collect, and transport the hatchlings. You may at times see CEA personnel collecting babies and transporting them in styrofoam containers – please know that CEA is NOT stealing them, selling them, nor disposing of them!!!  CEA is protecting them.  They will be transported to the officially designated area and held under strict guidelines, then released in the night at the same area where they were born. CEA official personnel will have photo 2016 ID badges with the CEA license #;  you can ask to see credentials if you are in doubt. There are very strict guidelines for this process under NOM 162-Semarnat and CEA will be following all very thoroughly,  so no worries.  If you see un-licensed personnel, please report to CEA.

  1. is it just me or has anyone else noticed the decline of akumal bay nests as compared to other local bay areas.
I think we all know that the crowds and the beach obstructions from the hotels are the cause of turtles becoming more vacant from this beach every year, when will the people with the power to change this step in and facilitate that change, I am referring to the large resort owners at abr and secrets and the palapas that were supposed to disappear during turtle season.
