Mexican Independence Day at La Palapa

Throughout Mexico on the evening of 15 September celebrations were going strong, gearing up for el grito at midnight.  El grito ushers in Independence Day, the 16th of September, when Mexico fought to become independent from Spain.  AkumalNow caught up with one celebration at La Palapa in Chemuyil.  The restaurant was decorated to the hilt with colorful balloons and ¡Viva México! signs.  There was a special menu with native dishes and the added attraction of chiles en nogada, the red, white, and green confection that symbolizes the Mexican flag.

At the entrance was a special tequila bar featuring a multitude of brands.  Entertainment included a deejay and dancing.  There were masks and crazy hats that people donned to be photographed inside a large picture frame.  And surprise!  Mary Henderson was presented with a birthday cake by La Palapa owners Tony and Carlos . . . ‍¡Viva México!
