Mayan Garden Club Tip of the Month

The February meeting of The Mayan Garden Club was held on the beautiful patio of Casa de los Gatos. Future activities were discussed, which include local beautification projects, tours of local nurseries and Botanical Gardens, and fundraisers to support club activities. A website, being designed with the help of YuCanTech, will furnish helpful gardening hints and information, as well as updates on club projects. A pot luck brunch rounded off the meeting.

Did you know that tomato plants like a little coffee in the morning — just like we do! Work the grounds into the soil at base of plant. This will also benefit other acid loving plants. Lydia Hollinger and Marguerite Kirk have found that this tip is working well for them. Their cherry tomato plants are going crazy since they’ve been using coffee grounds in the bed.

    • any plants that thrive on acid will do well with coffee grounds. Be sure the coffee grounds are used and not fresh from the container, You can use them or roses, azaleas, fruit trees, or any other fruit, vegetable or flower that loves acid soil.
