She and her daughter sell produce not only from their own garden but from fields south all the way to Chetumal. Trucks usually arrive by 7:30 am filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, masa and all the fixings for a traditional maya feast. The women also prepare tamales and empanadas on some days and fresh tortillas are always available. They are open 7 days a week from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm. Get there early for the best selection — she sells out fast!
The Frutería is in Akumal in the first block on the main avenue. Merly, who plays on the Akumal Stars women’s soccer team, and her husband operate the shop. The couple are members of the Jinetes de Akumal motorcycle club, which is involved in several charitable endeavors in the area.
