The first Saturday in May is always the date for the famed “Run for the Roses,” and Akumal is going to join this fun celebration with Kentucky Derby–Akumal-Style. Turtle Bay Bakery and Cafe is hosting this event. The Kentucky Derby race begins at 5:34 pm local time, but suggest you arrive by at least 4:30 pm in order to place your bets via blind draws, select your seat for the TV coverage, order from the Derby Menu, sip a mint julep, and–of course– show off your hat.
For 100 pesos, 50 pesos, or 20 pesos you can draw a horse’s name from each of the respective Blind Draw Betting Pools. The pools are for WIN, 100 pesos; PLACE (second place), 50 pesos; or SHOW, (third place), 20 pesos. —or be a big spender and have a horse from all three of the pools. Incidentially, there are usually 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby, so the potential payout is:
- 100 pesos x 20 horses = 2000 pesos from the WIN Pool;
- 50 pesos x 20 horses = 1000 pesos from the PLACE Pool;
- 20 pesos x 20 horses =400 pesos from the SHOW Pool
It’s a fun late afternoon event with prizes for best hats (see attached flyer) and singing “My Old Kentucky Home” as well as the chance to meet your friends and make new ones.
