Do Pemex Guarantee Signs Really Mean Anything?

Last year we had a report on how not to get scammed at a Pemex. Well, believe it or not, today we have a positive story about Pemex.

SafeGas-Pemex Guarantee SignsYou may have noticed that some Pemex stations have a sign that guarantees to fix any problems you may have while purchasing gasoline. Do they really mean what they say or are they just an empty promise?

One of our readers recently went to Pemex station number 5971 (halfway between Puerto Aventuras and Akumal). Having her credit card, but little cash on hand, she asked first if the credit card machine was working and told that it was. After filling the car with 500 pesos of gas, she gave the attendant her credit card to pay. He came back and said the internet was not working and she would have to pay cash so she used most of the cash she had and did. When she arrived home, she was suspecious (as she should be) and checked her credit card account. She saw the attendant had charged her card in addition to taking her cash, so she had paid twice!

She was about to just dispute the charge with her credit card company when she remembered that this station had one of those signs that promised great service. So she decided to give it a try. She sent her complaint to the email listed on the Pemex sign, [email protected], and made sure to include the station number.

Within minutes she received a reply saying the problem would be taken care of within 24 hours. The very next day she received a personal email from the Cancún headquarters telling her the man who defrauded her had confessed, when confronted, and had been fired. She was informed that she could go to the station and see the station manager, Mr. Saúl Hernández, to get a refund or they could send the refund to her residence. They also apologized for the problem.

The next day, she went to the station and when the manager realized who she was he immediatly ran to his office to get an envelope of cash from his safe. When she opened it  she discovered not $500 pesos, but $1000 pesos! She pointed out the mistake to the manager, but he said it was no mistake, the extra was a gratuity for reporting the dishonest employee. The manager gave her his personal phone number to report any more problems.

Can’t do better than that. Stay with stations that are owned by the people at Corpogas and have a sign posted. While it is not a promise that you won’t initially get scammed, it is a promise that they will correct the problem for you right away. The guarantees work! And if you go by Pemex 5971 tell Mr. Hernández thank you for the great service, and you that saw the article in AkumalNow.
