CEA Turtle Season- September 2016

September was a busy month for hatchlings.  Nests hatching on all beaches nightly, some beaches with multiples.  There is not a set time for the hatchlings, but luckily most of them get to the water safely in the night.  The volunteers work early evening shifts before dark to help protect the babies that hatch at dusk.  We hope to see many of these cute little guys back on our shores…. decades from now!

One of the unfortunate things about hatching season is the dreaded predators –  mapaches (raccoons) and coati mundis.  These critters have a remarkable sense of smell and can find the eggs, sometimes before the experts!  This is Mother Nature’s way, but the Tortuga Team is not fond of the damage they do.  Beach residents should be sure their trash is contained and does not attract these critters to the area.  Finding this scene below is very sad for those who work so hard protecting the mommas while on the beach.  Darn egg eaters-Darn Mother Nature ! If you find a scene like below-contact security on your beach or [email protected].  All of this information is recorded for the data base that goes to the government at end of the season.

A big thank you to Bill and Betsy Miller from Pennsylvania.  This couple has come to CEA to volunteer with the turtle program for 7 years – they are a huge help during this busy time.  The STAFF is very very appreciative of all the work you do for the tortuga team!!! ¡Muchas, Muchas Gracias!!
