Yoga in Akumal

Entering Akumal, one must pass Yoga en Akumal, which is located on the upper floor of the White Arch. The studio has existed as a place for yoga for many years, serving both the resident community and our visitors. Meet the instructors —

Leticia Cordova is the soul of the studio. One of the original Akumal residents, we call her Doña Yoga. While she no longer teaches in the classroom her wisdom supports our efforts with guidance and the loving hand of the Mama.

One teacher at the studio, Dani Knod, draws from many years of practice at Yoga en Akumal as well as from a fascination and inner awareness of how the breath can be used to direct energy throughout the body.  She sees that the health of the physical body is directly reflected in the flow of energy. Her classes guide practitioners of all levels through a thoughtful mix that may include postures, various breathing and visualization techniques, and deep relaxation.

During the high season, master guest teacher Michael Stewart can be found teaching from the depths of his experience and wisdom. He has decades of study and practice in in both Classical and Tantric yoga traditions. Michael travels the world teaching yoga, returning to Akumal to enrich us with new gems from ancient practices.

Offering an approach to yoga that focused on the spine, the breath and the observation of how it felt to find freedom in movement and breathing, her classes were open and accessible for all levels of students. Daily classes were liberally dosed with storytelling, yoga philosophy, and playful exploration.  Marti is missed.

Another instructor has recently joined the staff, Sofïa.
