In Memoriam: Gary Phillips

On Thursday, Gary Phillips of Casa Cenote passed away. He was supported by his much loved daughter Teysha, who was with him in his last days.
Gary was a larger than life person. He was one of the first people to recognize the beauty of Tankah, and a great supporter of our community. He opened Casa Cenote in 1989, before there was electricity, houses, hotels, and a fence around the cenote!
His restaurant became a meeting place for friends and neighbours. Sunday afternoons were legendary at Casa Cenote, with music, dancing, great food, friends and good times. He will be missed by many.
For those currently in the community, Teysha invites you to remember him at the restaurant Sunday February 5, at 12:00pm. At Gary’s request, no tears…..he wants a celebration.

  1. So sad. He was such a beautiful soul, but his energy will remain with us. I send much love to him, his family, and to everyone in Akumal. Love, Char Fried

  2. Gary, you were such a big part of our lives in Akumal..All those Sunday barbecues…gazillions of them (by the way….where did all the Villa Miramar Tervis Tumblers go? I kept leaving them there on Sundays). I hope you’re enjoying them in Heaven! Much love to you dear friend. I have lots and lots of photos of our adventures at Casa Cenote, so I will never forget you!

  3. Just heard this news about Gary. We have enjoyed many afternoons at the restaurant for many years. If Gary was there we usually visited with him while enjoying the good food and the awesome view!
    Our condolences to the family.

  4. Very sorry to hear about Gary. It’s been many years since I’ve been to Casa Cenote. Started going in 1992. Met Gary through a guy named Terry that owned condo’s in Akumal Sur. We enjoyed visiting Gary and Pam on our many trips to the Yucatan.Found out about Gary’s passing trying to plan a trip for Birthday in July 2024.
