Vecinos de Akumal Norte is continuing to move forward in several areas. First, copies of legal documents that allow Vecinos to act on behalf of North Akumal are ready to go and the process is underway. This is the first step towards regularization of the community. Regularization will allow us access to public services and low interest federal loans, which in turn will allow us to facilitate street lighting, sewer system, access road, and finishing the paving of our road.

Obviously the copies weren’t free! Vecinos is asking that houses chip in $300 pesos, condos $200 pesos, and vacant lots $100 pesos.

The second area is our police presence. North Akumal actually has no right to police services because we aren’t a regularized, legal subdivision. At present the Tourist Police patrol as a courtesy in exchange for gas and upkeep for the 4-wheeler they use. New tires have just been purchased for them, and Vecinos would like houses to give $150 pesos, condo $100, and vacant lots $50.

Finally, the repair that was done in front of Playa Caribe when the road caved in still needs to be paid. Repairs were made quickly and tourists here for high season weren’t inconvenienced. The cost shared out amounts to $500 pesos per house, $350 per condo, and $250 per vacant lot.

So, add up your contribution and send it down with a friend to the Vecinos office at La Tortuga, or put it in you suitcase right now!

The really big news in North Akumal happened this past Tuesday. Representatives from the federal government were here with excellent news. The government has authorized solar panel street lighting for North Akumal. And not only that, the representatives said they had “strict orders from D.F.” not to leave without our North Akumal sewage project plans, which the capital would seriously look at. In addition, the feds are willing to assist with our access road. Lots will be going on this coming week!
