The Akumal community center is nearly completed! Just a few details yet to be finished, which Rocio has in hand. And the entire project was done by donations.
The ground floor is 12’ x 22’ long with an outsideTV sidewalk apron going around the entire building. On the ground floor are the security station and Vecinos’ offices, each with a restroom. The second floor is open meeting space with restroom.
The Guardia Nacional complement moved in 29 December, and the twelve guards will remain until their permanent barracks is built on the other side of the laguna, about one year. After that two guards will be stationed at the Akumal building at all times. They will be in contact with Target security, the pluma, and each other by radio and camera, which Vecinos will provide and maintain ownership.
At the same time, the Marineros are stepping up their efforts to curtail illegal fishing in the area. Drones, boat and foot patrols are planned, as well as a WhatsApp number for people to make anonymous reports.
