Keep Akumal Tidy!

On north side of entrance road - what a beautiful thought!

Jen Smith of Turtle Bay Bakery sent the following email Saturday, one part of which deals with her efforts to Keep Akumal Tidy.  Walkway lighting and recycling are also projects in the works. —

“Hola Neighbors

We have come to the time of year where rain and mosquitos have returned. I am working with the delgado of the Akumal pueblo, Paul Sanchez Navarro With his new nonprofit OMCA, and the municipality of Tulum to organize a pick up of all trash, containers, larger items that have  been cluttering up your yard, bodega, behind the house, etc… that may catch water and become a breeding ground for the nasty mosquito.  They will be coming thru Akumal this coming Monday morning around 8 am, all you have to do is put your items in front of your house, condo building, hotel and they will pick them up  Please pass on the information to anyone and everyone so we all can take advantage of this wonderful oppurtunity to make Akumal a cleaner and less mosquito infested area! The truck will be going thru Akumal, starting at the Cea property and making its way to the lagoon. Those of you on the bays outside of Akumal we are working out a drop off or confirming pickup on your bays. Will send a follow up confirming pick up in Jade Bay, South Akumal y Aventuras Akumal.

On another note, Turtle Bay Cafe has been sponsoring the clean up of the entrance of Akumal since October  of 2014. We have a wondeful senor who cleans, sweeps the walkway y prunes the plants from the highway to the library four mornings a week. If anyone else would like to help contribute to help mainting the entrance to Akumal please let me know. This is the first impression people get of our town and as we all noticed has become a little chaotic, to put it very nicely.  With everything that is happening to our wonderful little town this is one thing that is easy to maintain. We were able to work together with CFE and through donations made by Turtle Bay Cafe, La Buena Vida, Coco Properties, Akumal Direct, Suzanne y Beryl, Sherwood y Bob Anders, Judy y Tom Baxter, Sharon y John Winkle, Din y Teri Richardson we bought and CFE installed 18 street lights from the library to across the bridge. We are currently still looking for a few other donations to illuminate the entrances and exits off the highway.

We are also currently looking for donations for our recylcing containers that we are hoping to purchase and install in the month of July. For more information please contact either myself or Paul [email protected]

We have a recycling program that is ready to go for our town, including all the bays and the pueblo. Our goal is to start with 2 stations in the pueblo, 1 -2 on the walkway into town, and a 3-4 located from the arch to Yal Ku lagoon and 1-2 stations on each bay. Many of the tourists that come to visit Akumal are already recycling in their home country and there is no reason why we can’t

Working together we all can help maintain and improve Akumal. For any questions please contact either myself at [email protected] or my cel is 984-151-9522 or Paul at [email protected]

Saludos. Jen”
