Akumal Foodie – Turtle Bay Cafe & Bakery

Meeting a friend for lunch at Turtle Bay Café & Bakery, I had the good fortune to run into Bart Smith, co-proprietor of this favorite spot for tourists and locals.
Purchased by Jennifer and Bart Smith in 2003, Turtle Bay was

TBC’s Attentive Service

originally owned by Thomas and Sydney Reagan. The Smiths worked very hard to create the landmark restaurant it is today. They started a catering business in 2005 and as Bart commented, neither hurricane, swine flu, or economic down-turn keeps the brides away.

Whether you are looking for a hearty breakfast or just pastries, a quick lunch or a delicious dinner, this is the spot. The menu is varied with interesting sandwiches, flat breads and fresh main courses. There is something for every palate.

Always looking to improve their footprint, sometime in 2011, Jen and Bart bought Lucy’s Ice Cream. They offer 21 handmade ice creams that can be purchased at the bakery.  In 2014 the Akumal Distilling Co. was born.  Their first
offering was the award winning Cueva Vodka. This is available for purchase and can be found on the shelves of many bars and restaurants. In 2020, a premium vodka Alux will be released along with two rums, El Matancero and Zaci Overproof. These rums are derived from piloncillo, an unrefined cane sugar, that’s brought in from Chiapas. If you would like a tour of the distillery, you can make an appointment. In the fall of 2020 they will offer daily tours and tastings.

In 2016, a dorm and research center called Tortuga Escondida was constructed in the jungle west of Akumal. Artist’s residency to research environmental groups come there from all over the world.
Jen and Bart’s latest venture, The Akumal Arts Foundation, hosts the Akumal Arts Festival each fall. “This initiative is about using art to help bring awareness of the environment and sustainability,” according to Bart. This past year, the festival offered 130 free classes to the children of the Pueblo, including art, science, sustainability, music, and computers.

Turtle Bay Café & Bakery  is so much more than just food. Jen, Bart and their entire staff speak volumes of the Akumal of the future.  The restaurant is open for breakfast from 7-12, Lunch 12-6, and Dinner 6-10. Happy Hour is 4-6 Daily.

I have been going to Turtle Bay Café from the beginning when the Reagans first opened shop. I will continue going and support this great fun spot.
