World Turtle Day is celebrated every year on May 23. Because it fell on Sunday this year, Akumal celebrated on May 24. CEA staff and volunteers, as well as a veterinarian from the Monkey Sanctuary, gave short talks on turtle biology, life cycle, hazards, predators, and how best to protect our beloved turtles. The children of Hekab Be Library had fun learning, playing games, and enjoying refreshments afterwards!
A Guardian of Akumal’s Turtles explains the importance of keeping the beach quiet, dark, and empty of obstructions to protect nesting turtles and hatchlings from May until November
Rain didn’t dampen the children’s enthusiasm although it did mean activities moved from the beach to LolHa’s patio.
The children learned how turtle diets and mouths differ by species.
Playing a game of “Predator: Who am I” made learning fun for the children.
