Vecinos de Akumal Norte Update, 1 July 2015

Projects are moving forward, according to a Vecinos spokesperson. One of the ongoing undertakings is the ordering of North Akumal. Our area is still a subdivision, which prevents us from accessing services available to legitimate communities. So this ordering will integrate North Akumal into the Tulum municipality, which will in turn make no-cost police coverage available to us. Vecinos is currently donating gas and tires for the 4-wheeler the police use to patrol our neighborhood.

Ordering will also put us in line for street lighting – solar type – at no cost to property owners. The project has already been authorized, though the funding has yet to be approved.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the ordering process will be the opportunity to make enforceable rules for our own community. For example, regulating size and hours of delivery trucks, deciding and enforcing construction regs such as building height will be within our purview to decide. We will also be able to present future projects to the government that they will cost-share with us.

DSCF0010If you’ve been around lately, you’ll have noticed the numbers painted on the street. These are survey markings for the sewer system project which was done at no cost to property owners. Originally it was to be a pricey undertaking at Vecinos expense. It pays to know people who know people, eh! Federal funds were approved in D.F. for the lines, but property owners will have to pay a share. This share will be assessed and collected by CAPA. Sewage will be treated at the small station near the highway, after it is rehabilitated. Both the pueblo and Akumal Norte will be served by this facility.

Vecinos would like to thank La Lunita owner Annette Bartsch for cleaning and maintaining “the curve”.
