Real Estate Sales

How are real estate sales in the area? According to Russ Motley of Akumal Investments, all is well. Motley said that sales hit rock bottom in 2008, but have risen 50% per year since then.

Yet, several weeks ago a realtor who deals with an international clientele brought a group of 30 interested, vetted investors to the Riviera Maya. After driving through Akumal, where he has a property listed, the group filled out comment cards. According to the realtor, Hector Quintana of Zen Global, every one of the party reacted to the number of realtor signs on properties ̶ they wondered why people seemed to be bailing out of Akumal.

Why, indeed. We all know it’s a gorgeous place to live or spend whatever free time one can scrape together. But we owners aren’t a particularly young bunch anymore.  (OK, we still look great!) Maybe there are health issues that prevent traveling to our properties. Perhaps we’re down-sizing our investments and holdings. Or perhaps we need more space – the condo just isn’t large enough anymore. And there are the new tax requirements. Lots of owners, lots of reasons.

When Akumal Investments opened years ago, they intended to sell from their office, rather than on the road. To that end they asked the other area realty companies to remove their signs. Didn’t happen, so AI went into the sign business, too. On 20 May, there were 28  for sale signs put up by various sellers on properties along the North Akumal road; there are 120 lots in North Akumal.

Akumal Investments said they still prefer Akumal to be a sign-free community. And if all realtors agree, it will be done.
