As tourists begin to arrive in greater numbers, so, too, the thieves! An Akumal resident sent this note to friends:
“Well, I am really bummed. I went grocery shopping at Chedraui in Puerto Aventuras and got robbed – with my purse on my arm as always. Two people bumped my basket and pushed their way to the shelves while one person distracted Carlos with questions. As I was turned trying to get around these rude people, another unzipped my purse and took my money – nothing else. I didn’t even know it until I was buying an ice cream outside the store.”
Actually, Chedraui stores in the area have had several instances of robbery and attempted robberies over the past few months.
