Best Shirt November 2014

Best Shirt November 2014 was a special event.  Included are Mary’s remarks from that evening:

Welcome to “November’s Robin’s Been Out-Shirted Event”–—or better known as “Best Shirt Night.”  Tonight is very, very special and it relates to a special time in Mexico as well.  The Day of the Dead is celebrated between October 31st and November 2nd.  {This is an integral part of Mexican culture—so much so that it was named an intangible heritage—or “Human Treasure” by UNESCO in 2003}.  The celebration is a time of remembrance and a time to celebrate life.

Although we are a week late for a Day of the Dead celebration– it is essentially what we are doing tonight—remembering and celebrating the life of David Poor.

David Poor died on Thursday, November 6, 2014.  He was a well-known community activist and served Akumal in many capacities among which was his work as Secretary to the late Akumal Development Council and the present Vecinos de Akumal Norte.  Special projects over the years have been road clean-ups, road construction, and his ability as a grand communicator.  Without David’s extensive data bank, much of Akumal Norte would have been clueless about events that impact our lives.  David’s e-mails made us feel included as well as knowledgeable.

Russ Motley thoughts about David:

“David was a fountain of love and caring.  When David’s fountain ran low he would gently borrow a little from his friends with a kiss and a hug.  When his friend’s fountains were low, even without asking, he would fill it with an ocean and still it never depleted his enormous fountain of love for his friends and family.  The man just ran deep in our hearts and always will.”

So—without many further words from me—I announce the Winner of the November, 2014 Best Shirt Night. This SHIRT depicts The Day of the Dead and has been re-gifted several times—originating with Steve Clouther, then Russ Motley, and now as a tribute to David Poor, November’s Best Shirt Night Winner.  David:  We will miss you intensely, but your memory will endure.

Will everyone please come to the edge for our group photo and to bid David “FAREWELL” and to send our love to Nancy and their children.  Nancy would like you to know that in January, 2015 there will be a Memorial to celebrate David’s life and his love of Akumal.  If you want to send a remembrance, Nancy has asked that a contribution to ACLU be made in David’s name.

David: You will be so missed by your many friends in Akumal!
