The 3rd Annual North Akumal owners meeting (Vecinos de Akumal Norte AC) was held 13 February 2015 at La Buena Vida.
Membership in the Association now totals 52, thirty-five of whom were present or represented at the meeting. The cost of membership in the Association has been increased to $3,000 pesos. This is a one-time fee. At present there is no plan for annual membership fees. Instead, requests for donations for specific projects will be made as needed.
The executive board members who will serve a 2-year term are President Henning Bartsch, Vice President Rhett Schober, Secretary Jamie Cost, Treasurer Tandy Muir-Warden, Vocals (i.e. members-at- large) Terry Richardson, Santos Aké, Mary Henderson, Carol Flores, and Dan Freeman.
The Treasurer’s report noted the remaining unpaid CAPA connect fees; collection of which will be pursued. Some donations for the emergency road repair in front of Playa Caribe were received in late 2014, so the balance will be credited in 2015. Contributions to repay the road repair loan are still welcome! Suggested amounts are $500 pesos / house, $350 pesos /condo, and $250 pesos / vacant lot. You may drop off your donation at the La Tortuga/La Mirage office.
Road. The road is now complete from the North Akumal entrance to just beyond La Mirage. A small portion of the road at the corner between La Sirena and Tranquilidad was completed in January. North Akumal residents are reminded that if there is a road problem, they should contact Vecinos immediately.
Legal Standing. Vecinos and the municipality of Tulum have signed an agreement which gives legal standing to the Vecinos Association as the sole representative of North Akumal. A formal signing ceremony will be held later this month.
Survey. Members agreed that the Board should proceed with a topographical survey of North Akumal immediately. The survey is required by the Municipality before Vecinos can proceed further with the next step in the sewage project and regularization. Updated owner information will be required for all properties. North Akumal is divided into 3 sections and volunteers will help gather the needed information: Section F (North Akumal entrance to La Buena Vida): Terry Richardson and Gonzalo Arcila; Section G (Buena Vida to Yool Caanal): Tandy M-W and Jamie Cost; and Section H (Yool Caanal to the lagoon): Dave Zucker and Mary Henderson.
Sewer Project. A meeting of all interested parties in the various sections of Akumal is scheduled for early March to discuss options for a coordinated sewage project for all areas. A plan will be presented to Tulum municipality in May.
Street Lighting. Once North Akumal is regularized (= we would be an actual, real life tiny city!), federal funding can be sought for street lighting. The feasibility of installing solar lights like those at the security tope will be investigated. The panels can be popped off in the event of a storm.
Security. Current cost for the guard stationed at the tope is $96,000 pesos/year. At some point, a second guard will be hired. [Portable defibrillators are available at the security caseta as well as LBV.]
Taxis. There is now an agreement with the taxi union for taxi stands at the lagoon and at the Park across from La Sirena/La Iguana. Rates and phone information will be posted soon.
Thank you to the owners who have served on the Board in the past. Your time and accomplishments have been noted and appreciated!
NB: Vecinos has a web site. At the moment it’s under repair, but we’ll let you know the address as soon as it’s operational again.
