Presidents Brief
The President’s brief is part of the new communications program. It will come out every three to four months or when needed. The purpose is to update you on current projects and new projects that are needed.
Projects In The Works
- Solar light restoration. 15 new lights were purchased for $30,000.00 pesos. They will be installed over the next two weeks
- The web site committee will meet this week to work on redesigning and updating content.
- Meetings took place this week with government officials: President of Tulum, Admiral from the Navy, personal assistant to the governor of Quintana Roo. Discussion for a plan for sargasso control.
- Dan Freeman and Rocio Cue met with the new Guardia Nacional Comisario for Quintana Roo. The general was very impressed with all Vecinos has done to help the guard. The guardsmen who have come to work here in the community are impressed with the kindness and respect shown to them as they do their jobs.
- The new bathroom facilities for the CCB will be completed this month. Once again, this project was made possible by generous donators from our community, and we thank them.
- Mónica Estrada is setting up and publishing our new Vecinos page on Facebook.
- Through a donation from one of our community members we were able to begin restoring Yalku Park this week. Men began to haul out debris, cut out dead foliage, and restore the original walking paths. When this phase of the operation is completed, we will start marking the trees and plants with their names, returning the park to its state as an arboretum. If you would like to volunteer to help or donate to purchase benches for the park, please contact the park committee at 984-177-5709 04 or 302-526-7407. Our goal is to make the park a wonderful place once more for guest to sit and read a book, bird watch or just relax ready for people to enjoy once more.
Reports From Committees
From Rocio Cue report on the Guardia Nacional
The Commissioner commented that he had received instructions from Mexico City to come to see the National Guard facilities in Akumal, as well as the president of the Asociación de Vecinos de Akumal Norte and personally thank him for hosting the GN.
Dan commented on the great work and support that the GN does from Chemuyil to San Martin, and how the atmosphere had changed since the GN arrival, now the community walk in the town with more tranquility and the area remained peaceful.
General Toscano commented that a study of the area would be carried out in order to make a support strategy, in this way the results of the GN would be much more effective, as well as it would try to send more vehicles and personnel to carry out their work with more efficiency.
Dan told him about the association’s idea of donating one hectare to the GN, land that is located on the other side of the Yalku Lagoon, where the GN would have more privacy and could make a large base where it could house more guards. And as soon as we could access the land, he would be invited to see it.
Finally, we gave him a tour of the facilities of the Community Center, as well as the construction of the new bathrooms.

From George Pritchard report on Sargasso and Budget
Vecinos over the years has operated under dues paid, but donations for projects. Vecinos has a very important program, which is security and its pluma. This program was started by Terry and then Vecinos took over financing the program. The program expenses are over 50% of the entire budget.
Moving forward in 2021, Vecinos is starting a 5-step financial program. This program is to control expenses and prioritize projects to ensure projects that benefit the entire community are done first.
Vecinos does recognize the need to address the sargasso program for all owners. After our Zoom meeting, many owners shared their views on how to address this problem. After reviewing the emails, we are down to 4 options. One option is to install a barrier system for HMB. The Sargasso committee has been working on this option with other options. The second option is a sargasso removal boat. This option is under review. The third option is to work with the government to manage the sargasso; we are currently in talks with government. The fourth option is do nothing and see if the sargasso will just go away. This is the worst option. The loss of tourism and income that the tourists bring to many owners and businesses is great.

From Communications, Carly Flores
The Communications Committee has met several times since its inception. Our plan is to flood you with emails until you beg us to stop. Or, we could let you know what’s happening . . . as it happens.
However it’s done, communication involves a sender and a receiver. We would be interested to receive your ideas, comments, and questions about Vecinos activities, plans, works-in-progress. For now, mail to [email protected]
