Taco Seasoning Packet: The Substitution

We Expats like to recreate our favorite dishes here in Mexico.  Quick pickups that are common in the US and Canada are not always available here in MX.  Can you imagine not being able to buy a packet of taco seasoning????  Not readily available here, so you need to make your own.

Here’s a simple recipe.  Easy, and everything is available in our local grocery store.  Increase the amount of ingredients and you’ll always have it on hand.

Taco Seasoning

2 tsp. hot chile powder                                       ½ tsp. paprika

1 tsp. onion powder                                            ½ tsp. sea salt ( love the pink salt)

½ tsp. garlic powder                                            1 tsp. ground cumin

½ tsp. oregano                                                       ¼ tsp fresh ground pepper

pinch of cayenne pepper                                    pinch of red pepper flakes

Blend together and store in a airtight container.

A few other hints: Baking soda is often found in the pharmacy.  Corn syrup is found in the baby aisle, and chocolate chips (bags of 11.5 ounces) are usually not found in the baking aisle but with the cocoa mix and other milk flavorings.

More and more items are becoming available for us, and in future issues of AkumalNow, I will give you some hints on substitutes for items not available.
