Día de la Tierra 2016
CEA participated in CicloSiete of Sustainability Week (La Semana por la Sostenibilidad), a seven day Latin America-wide event leading up to Earth Day, 22 April. The focus is on promoting and highlighting experiences that strengthen environmental sustainability throughout Latin America.
Each day was given a theme, and many youth groups were taught valuable knowledge about how to protect Mother Earth. The first event was Community Biologist Day. Two students, Santos Gerardo and Raquel from the high school Telesecundaria José Vasconcelos, were selected to be “community biologists” and join CEA’s biologists in the bay to learn about marine life, how to identify turtles, and how to monitor tourist interaction with the turtles.
Another event was Zero Waste Day, with the primary school Francisco Sarabia and the Telesecundaria José Vasconcelos participating. CEA staff went to the schools to deliver information on the 3Rs and help students design bins for sorting garbage. The objective is for students to track by weight over time how much waste they produce. CEA will continue to work with the schools to help monitor and track waste, as well as brainstorm and implement various strategies to reduce the quantity. Classes are now competing with each other to see how little trash their class can produce.
The third activity was a refresher workshop covering information on the fish refuge, ecosystems in the bay, and sea turtles. It was presented by guides from two of the local dive shops. More workshops are being planned for future dates for other groups.
It was a great week in Akumal for Our Mother Earth!
