Quintana Roo’s new time zone is a done deal! The Chamber of Delegates (Cámara de Diputados), will publish the decree on 31 January that sets the new time zone.
Cancun News on January 12, 2015 reported that the new Quintana Roo time zone change will go into effect at 2:00 a.m. on February 1, 2015. Quintana Roo will set its clocks ahead 1 hour, which will be the equivalent of U.S. Eastern Standard Time.
It is reported that the new time zone will only apply to northern Q.Roo. Several municipalities will remaining on central time, including Othon P. Blanco where Chetumal is located.
There’s still fuzzy communication about whether we’ll be making the change to Daylight Savings Time. Cancun News say that Quintana Roo will not change times at any point during the year. However, Rudy Garcia in USA Today says that Q.Roo “will continue to take part in the Daylight Savings Time program”.
*Update – Since the original publishing of this article, we are still receiving conflicting information on two items: 1) the region that will adopt the change (all of QR or just the north tourist zone) and 2) if DST will be a part of the new change. We do know that Feb 1 Akumal and surrounding communities will roll their clocks forward.
