Several local gardeners came up with the idea to create a local “Garden Club,” so that is just what they did! The Akumal Garden Club will meet once a month at different homes, visiting with the gardeners and viewing their garden. Club members will work with each other on their gardens and share information about the types of plants that do well in different locations, whether they do better in pots or planted directly into the garden bed, and other secrets. Members will learn where nearby viveros are located and what their plant specialties are. As an organized club it will be able to help with larger community projects in public spaces such as the Park in Akumal Norte. The club will be a great place to develop and build community ties with our “Vecinos”.
The first meeting of the Akumal Garden Club will be held on January 17, 2015, 12 noon at Casa Gatos. This is the home of Dan Freeman and David Zucker, located in Akumal Norte next door to the Que Onda Hotel. Look for a Maya stone wall with overhanging vines and an iron, Spanish style gate. If you have any trouble locating the house, call (984) 875-9096.
