The Mayans created a number system as an instrument to measure time, not to do mathematical calculations. Therefore, Mayan numbers have to do with days, months and years, and the way they arranged the calendar.
The Mayan system of counting required only three symbols: a point representing the value of one, a bar representing five, and a shell representing zero. These three symbols were used in several combinations, to track calendar events both past and future, and so that even uneducated people could do the simple arithmetic needed for traffic and commerce. That the Mayans understood the value of zero is remarkable: most of the world’s civilizations didn’t have the concept of zero at the time.
