Once again, Turtle Bay Bakery and Cafe is hosting “Kentucky Derby–Akumal Style.” Join the fun on May 7th by wearing your special hat, sampling a Kentucky (Akumal Style) menu, and placing your pool bets.
With pool betting, you pay your money and have a random draw from either or all of these three options: Win Pool, $100 pesos (first place), Place Pool, $50 pesos (second place), and Show Pool, $20 pesos (third place). The names of the horses running in this “fastest two minutes in sports” are in the pools. If your random- draw horse comes in first, you collect the Win Pool; if your random-draw horse comes in second, you collect the Place Pool; and if your random-draw horse comes in third, you collect the Show Pool. There are usually 20 horses running in the Derby–do the math–20 horses x 100 pesos = 2000 pesos–not bad for 100 peso investment!
Take a look at TBC’s menu–it looks yummy and food items are priced individually. Do try the traditional Mint Julep or TBC’s Cueva Julep–you won’t be disappointed.
A quick historical sketch of the Kentucky Derby:
There is nothing in the world quite like the Kentucky Derby. Each year on the first Saturday in May the eyes of the world turn to Kentucky for the celebrated Run for the Roses. The Derby has run every year since the first winner, Aristides, streaked across the finish line in 1874. For Kentuckians, the Derby is an annual rite to Spring. It is an event-filled two weeks centered around the Kentucky Derby Festival–one of the nation’s largest community festivals. Hot air balloons, steamboats, concerts, chow wagons, and the colorful Pegasus Parade are just some of the attractions that bring visitors to Kentucky year after year. It is also a time when hosts exhibit their finest culinary skills. The weeks are filled with parties and menus that vary from backyard barbecues to formal dinners. As the week progresses, the parties become more lavish; on Derby Day friends gather for a traditional Derby Breakfast. As the Thoroughbreds appear on the track of the famous Churchill Downs for the running of the Derby, everyone lifts one last julep and sings from the heart “My Old Kentucky Home.” On Derby Day, the whole world is from Kentucky!
One of the more colorful features of the Kentucky Derby is the outfits race-goers wear that are topped by fabulous hats. Here’s a few photos from last year’s TBC event. So get creative and set your sights to win a Best Hat Award–categories are Best Men’s Hat, Best Women’s Hat, and Largest Hat. TBC will award prizes to the winners in each category.
