Kentucky Derby #141–Akumal Style was shared by expats and visitors alike on the first Saturday in May 2015 at Turtle Bay Bakery and Café. Just as at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, on this day women take center stage with their high fashion outfits, and it was no less true in Akumal. Feathers, flora–even flags–decked the traditional colorful hats. Mint juleps as well as vodka juleps flowed freely as over 70 people sampled the Derby-inspired menu and placed a pool bet. Kentucky Colonel Bartley Smith presided over the winners in Best Hat categories: Best Women’s, Best Men’s, Best Derby-inspired, and Largest Hat. Colonel Smith said of the engaging and creative hats, “It just doesn’t get any better than this!”
American Pharoah was the winner of the Kentucky Derby, and two weeks later he followed this amazing feat by winning the Preakness in Maryland. Be sure to watch the prowess of this thoroughbred at the Belmont Stakes held in New York.
