The INAPAM card is Mexico’s senior citizen access. The acronym stands for Instituto Nacional de las Personas Adultas Mayores. One often hears the phrase personas de la tercera edad to describe those of us who’ve been around awhile: we’re neither children nor just plain grownups, but are living the third phase of our lives. The phase that comes with bennies and discounts . . . such as having access to the special line at Chedraui or Wal-Mart.
Other perks include a $50 peso ride on the Cozumel ferry, or a cheap trip to the airport from Playa del Carmen on ADO. Or you can get eye glasses, use a funeral home, eat out in restaurants, spend the day at Xcaret or an archaeological site, visit the local papelería and pharmacy, or max out your card at Truper! And the list goes on . . .
It’s not difficult to get the INAPAM card, and it’s FREE! You already might have the documents that are required. For example, you need your passport and FM or resident card, your C.U.R.P. card (the woman in Tulum said the C.U.R.P. number on the residente permanente card was OK), proof of address (CFE, CAPA, Telmex bill or predial, etc. in your name), and your phone number. Original and 1 copy, please. You’ll also need 2 of the tiny photos,
In Tulum, the office you’re looking for is behind the municipal building and HSBC. Go around the corner on Alfa Sur St. and into the open space. Straight ahead is the place you’re looking for. It’s open from 9:00 to 3:00, and a very nice woman will get you organized. It usually takes 2-3 days to get your official card.
And did we mention — it’s free! You don’t have to be a citizen, but be sure you’re at least 60 yrs. old.
