How to Renew Your Driver’s License in Tulum – December 2025

Last year the process for renewing a driver’s license changed.  States, rather than municipalities, are now running it, and the process is smooth and quick ‒ just follows the steps.

Step 1:  Collect your documents.

  • CURP certificate – brand new printout
  • Passport and residency card (+ 1 copy each)
  • Current Tulum license and copy
  • CAPA or CFE bill with your name on it (+ 1 copy)
  • Recent eye exam results

Step 2: Go to the IMOVEQROO office in Tulum.

Turn right at the Aki stoplight, then left at Bodega Aurrera on Calle Okot.  The office is located behind the front building on the left side in Plaza Andador.

Present your documents at the counter and say you’re there for renewal. The clerk will ask you to take a seat in the lobby and fill out the application form.  If you’re renewing to drive a passenger light truck or a car, select license Type A “Automovilista”.  You may renew for 2,3,4, or 5 years.

When it’s your turn, you’ll go to a cubicle and another very friendly clerk will enter your information from the application, take your  photo and fingerprints. (It may be possible to download the application form if the site is available: https://qroo.gob.mx/imoveqroo/ )You’ll then read a short statement in Spanish acknowledging the process and pay with debit or credit card; cash is not accepted.

The clerk will ask you to review your drivers’ license on a monitor before it’s finalized. Make sure all the information is correct!  You’ll then go out to the lobby and wait for a few minutes while your license is printed.  Once your license is handed to you, you’re good to go.  I was in and out of the office in less than 20 minutes!

You don’t need to make an appointment. Office hours listed online are 9 AM – 5PM, Monday-Friday.  If you want to check first, the phone is 984-688-2742.
