Hackers have no mercy, not even on AkumalNow.
As some of you might have noticed, our web site was targeted by hackers in mid-December. This resulted in our site serving up some malicious content. Don’t worry, we don’t believe this content was being served to you, but rather was being called from other web sites. Hackers like to distribute their content across multiple sites. In other words, reading our articles and using our site should not have caused any issues for you, our readers. What you might have noticed is that Google or your web browser warned you that our site was bad.
In this recent hack attack over 100,000 web sites like ours were hacked by taking advantage of a coding vulnerability. We regularly update our site to minimize this risk, but in this case the exploit was taken advantage of very quickly and the coders did not have time to put out the new updates in time.
Our tech guy worked hard to get us back to normal. The site is now patched up, cleaned up, and we have a shiny new web firewall to protect us in the future. Even Google has given us back our clean bill of health. Any warnings from Google or your web browser should fall away in the next day or so (if not already).
We appreciate your patience. Cleaning up problems like these can take a little time, especially since we run on a shoestring (no) budget. Please know that the safety of you and your information is the highest on our priority list. This hack did not target any data, only use of the site, so you can rest easy knowing that your information is safe.
