Nopales can be grown in our gardens simply by putting a pad of the cactus on the dirt — it will root and grow! Take a pad and put it upright about an inch deep in soil or rock. Do not water it. There is enough moisture in the pad for it to anchor and grow. Watering may cause rot. Once the pad roots, feed with high nitrogen fertilizer if needed. Water only when dry, otherwise they will rot or get too heavy and fall over.
You can find nopal in every jungle and can be easily transplanted.
