Five years ago, we published an article on golf carts and the usage of them in Akumal. The number of golf carts on the beach road has increased enough for us to post again. The beach road is a very busy road during the high season, with taxis, vans, cars, motorbikes, the bicyclists, walkers and golf carts all fighting for a spot.
♦ According to Mexican law, you must be 18 years old to drive a golf cart. If you are under 18 years old, you need a special permit, and a parent must be in the cart with you. These rules apply to driving any vehicle in Mexico. This also means that a child sitting on an adult’s lap is not allowed to drive the cart.
♦ A golf cart holds 4 people, and possibly one small child.
♦ Golf carts are not allowed on legal roads. When the beach road in Akumal ends atthe Seven-Eleven, the golf cart is not allowed further. Definitely not over the bridge. It doesn’t matter if it’s a gas or battery powered cart. Golf carts do not have license plates, so they can’t be on public roads.
♦ They also do not have insurance. According to a local insurance agent, there is only one company in México that insures golf carts, and that’s for use on golf course fairways and covers property damage only. If you hit anything – or anyone – with the cart you have rented, the responsibly is yours.
This is a gentle reminder to help you to enjoy your vacation. Safe driving!
