On Thursday May 4th, a Vecinos Kitchen Cabinet meeting was held at Casa Gatos. The meeting was representative of all members of the Akumal Norte community. It included Vecinos, ADMAK, and unaffiliated community members. This meeting was held for the purpose of voting on the installation of street lights for all of Akumal Norte. This lighting is completely self-contained, needs no solar panels or electrical support. The batteries and charging panel are in the top of the lamp. Samples of the proposed lights have been on display between Yool Caanal and La Tortuga for the past week. Following is a description of the light package and a complete breakdown of the cost.
LIGHT PACKAGE DESCRIPTION
- a) LED lights with Lithium batteries
- b) Lights are 1000-watt illumination
- c) The lights have motion detectors and put out dim light until cars or pedestrians come near, then they go up to full brightness. When dim, the light still offers enough light to easily see down the road.
- d) The lights are mounted on 10’ poles using security bolts that require a special wrench for removal.
- e) Light poles are 4” diameter, round metal poles encased in recycled thick plastic; the plastic is jungle green.
- f) The poles will be set in concrete beside the roadbed, not on it. They will be staggered down both sides of the road at 20 meter (65 foot) intervals to give the best spread of the light halo.
- g) The contract with the solar installing company includes a (5) five year guarantee.
- h) At the end of the guarantee period, replacement batteries are available for purchase from the company when/if needed.
- i) The lights are behind glass in a metal case. They will stand up to 100 miles per hour winds and can be removed if necessary.
COST PER LIGHT INSTALLED

$150.00 (dollars) Cost and Installation of 4” poles set in concrete base.
$ 54.72 (dollars) 16% IVA tax.

We are proposing a two phase completion plan. First phase will be 50 lights, then 2nd phase the remaining 50. We are asking each lot owner in Akumal Norte to purchase one or more lights. If your building is on two lots then you would purchase two lights. If you already have lighting, we are asking you to purchase a light anyway, to be placed in those areas where we are unable to contact owners. We would greatly appreciate donations of extra lights. To start off the project, David and Dan of Casa Gatos will purchase three lights. This email is being sent to all email addresses that Vecinos has, members and non-members alike. It is, after all, a community project that benefits everyone who lives and vacations here.
Payments can be made by bank transfer, checks Mexican or American, or credit card. Vecinos will issue a Factura or receipt for your payments.
At the completion of the street light project any monies not used will automatically be transferred to the central sewage project. Being a public membership organization our accounts are open for your perusal at any time.
The importance of this project is that we are achieving our goal of completing our infrastructure and becoming a completed development. The federal government is giving failed developments a period of time to complete requirements. So we have completed central water system and road, now street lighting, then a central sewer system and underground electric lines. In addition we have a law firm working to give us our next best step for the type of community governing system to go for.
