Alzheimer’s News

Poking through the media recently, I came across a couple of articles dealing with Alzheimer’s.

The first, written by Ruth Drew, is “How to Talk to Someone With Alzheimer’s”.  Drew’s grandfather was afflicted with the degenerative brain disease and would often get up before 2 a.m., sure it was morning. No amount of showing him the clock or pointing to the darkness outside could persuade him otherwise. “Everything you know about persuasion and logic you have to put on the shelf,” she says.  You can read the article at  https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/23/well/family/alzheimers-talk-caregivers.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

The second is “What to Know if You’re Considering the Alzheimer’s Drug Leqembi” and can be read at  https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/06/health/leqembi-alzheimers-drug.html?smid=nytcore-android-share   The Food and Drug Administration has given full approval to the drug for patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, and Medicare said it would cover 80% of the cost of the $26,500-per-year medication.  There are, of course, many considerations before jumping in with both feet.
