Akumal’s wild and crazy kinda guy—better known as Kevin McKee—or Red Beard—has been part of the Akumal community for the past 20 years. During that time he has touched the lives of many wanting things from the States brought to their Akumal residences.
But what makes Red Beard a wild and crazy kinda guy? Is it that he has made over 125 driving trips from the USA (including Alaska) to Akumal? That he once transported a dead dog? That he bought a car formerly owned by a CIA connection, then sold it in Akumal? That he brought 80 cans of corn for a customer? That he married an already married woman from Akumal with the ceremony “performed” by a deceased person? In my book, these are definitely on the wild and crazy side!
Red Beard (also known to locals as Barba Roja) has become the recognized expert on driving across Mexico’s borders, and he freely offers advice on when and where is the easiest way to enter or exit Mexico by car. People wanting to use Red Beard’s services paid expenses and a fee. The fee includes putting the vehicle in his name along with all the pertinent information for the Immigration officials (like that marriage certificate!!!) and transferring the car to the owner once it has arrived in Akumal.
Other “wild and crazy” things that have had Red Beard’s special touch have been bringing in fireworks and helping to set them off, dying his beard to match a holiday (i.e. green for St. Patrick’s Day), playing Santa, and “holding court” at Happy Hours relating his many escapades. Getting the particulars on these many adventures is often hilarious, and prompts such statements as: “I can’t believe this happened to you, Red Beard! Tell me more.” He will do so gladly and in a colorful and entertaining way.
AkumalNow recognizes Kevin “Red Beard” McKee as truly a unique individual, and it is with regret that we report Red Beard is moving to Florida. This doesn’t mean that he will quit helping people get their vehicles and other goods back and forth from Akumal.
