Akumal’s Kentucky Derby was celebrated May 6th at Turtle Bay Bakery and Café with rousing success. Akumal joins with so many others world-wide who focus on Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky for the “greatest two minutes in sports,” the Kentucky Derby, which is a horse race for 3-year olds that has been run on the first Saturday in May since 1875. The Kentucky Derby, Akumal-Style, featured a special menu from TBC, blind draw bets, and juleps, and colorful hats, and rapt attention to the TV where live coverage was broadcast. Of course, Akumalians love participating in fun events like this, and wearing a colorful hat personally designed was especially pleasing to all attending and garnered lots of attention to the wearers. This year’s winner of Best Hat was Sherwood Anders, who received a box of wine courtesy of Turtle Bay.
Another of course–Akumalians love to be winnners, and this year’s Blind Draw Pools were sold out. Winners of each pool took home a percentage of the money bet with the remainder going to pay for Jen’s efforts to keep the Akumal entrance road well-lit.
