This month we will not only have a menu item in another article, but we also decided to explore some of the under-represented food in the pueblo. You may wonder what exactly the “pueblo” is. In Akumal we refer to the town that is west of Akumal, over the bridge, to be the pueblo. This town is rich in Maya heritage, as this is where many of the Maya who work in Akumal live.
Of course, wherever people live, people must have food. The pueblo has many restaurants, most of native cuisine, but each with their own flare. Oh, and they are all very affordable.
Last night this foodie took his family and headed to the pueblo to try somewhere new. We found El Último Maya.
As you head into the pueblo and crest the first hill you will see a small grocery on the right corner; continue on and you will immediately see the entrance to El Último Maya. If you go too quickly you might pass it – the entrance is only about 5 meters of storefront.
After grabbing some street parking out front, the three of us ordered up drinks and mixed ceviche to start. The ceviche was very fresh and had a great flavor and nice little spice to it. Then for the courses we ordered ribs, standard fish tacos, and chef special fish tacos. The ribs were so tender they fell off the bone with a scrumptious BBQ-style sauce. The taco plates also did not disappoint.
In addition to great food and nice portion sizes, the service was fast and attentive, and the check was extremely affordable.
Alfredo, the owner, first arrived in Akumal over 25 years ago and fell in love with the beautiful beach. In 2002 Alfredo moved to Spain for 12 years and studied as a chef, but he had to come back to his love, Akumal, for the beach and small village feel. He started running El Último Maya in 2014. El Último Maya serves authentic traditional Mexican food and all meals are homemade and fresh.
El Último Maya is open 6 days a week from 12:30 – 9:00pm (closed Tuesday). Check out the menu below. Whether you are a visitor or resident, don’t miss this Akumal treasure.
