If you are ever craving a sweet treat, look no further than our very own Akumal resident, Yamile Medina.
Yamile moved here from Campeche with her mother at the age of sixteen to join her brother who was already living here. She has called Akumal home for the last 30 years, marrying in 1998. For more than 20 years Yamile has worked as the maid for Casa Mayanah. During the COVID pandemic, with her children at home she occasionally made different desserts for her family. One day she decided to bake, and we are so glad she did. She started with carrot bread, and every time she baked she would share with friends, always asking for their honest feedback. She did this often until she had the recipe she works with now. Her friends started asking her to bake for them, and little by little she acquired and perfected recipes.
In addition to working in Casa Mayanah, Yamile also has worked for 9 years as a waiter in Puerta Aventuras, as well as in Bahía Príncipe. Working so much leaves little time to bake, yet Yamile seems to be able to do it all. She doesn’t have a regular baking schedule. She tries to bake at least once a week, and having regular clients has helped her tremendously. She has home delivery in the Pueblo and pick-up at her house for everyone else lucky enough to purchase her breads.
Currently Yamile makes orange, banana, carrot, Philadelphia cheese walnut breads, traditional flan, and other desserts. When she can acquire natural corn she also makes corn bread. Recently she decided to name her small business Dulce Antojo. She advertises on Akumal Pueblo Facebook page when she will be baking, but orders can also be made by contacting her directly through WhatsApp at 52 984 133 9033 or through Facebook messenger.
Yamile is very hard working and her motivation is her family. Her children are studying in Mérida. Her 23 year-old daughter has studied Dentistry and is now doing social service. Her 18 year-old son has recently entered the university to study architecture. Her 13 year-old daughter is in the town’s high school. Yamile’s husband works as a waiter at XelHa. This is an extremely hard working family that is an honor to know.
