Ingrid Clouther, 1941-2016

ingridIngrid Clouther, of Harwich, MA, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2016 in Beth Israel in Boston.  Ingrid is survived by Steve Clouther, her beloved spouse of more than 56 years, as well as Stefanie, her daughter; Ryan, her grandson; and Robert, her son-in-law; Fredette of Uxbridge, MA.

Ingrid was born on June 16, 1941 in Weipert, Germany in Sudetenland, and at a young age moved to Wassertrűdingen, Bavaria, Germany.  It was in Wassertrűdingen where she met Steve who was in the Air Force at nearby Hesselberg.  They married on May 7, 1960 in Wassertrűdingen and relocated to Boston, MA area a month later.

Ingrid lived in Medfield, MA for 30 years before making the move to Akumal in 1999, where she and Steve built Casa Colibri in South Akumal.  Having had a condo in Aventuras Akumal for 13 or so years before that move, Ingrid already had a well-established extended community of friends and acquaintances.  She often expressed that living right on the Caribbean shore was a dream that got even better once the pool was installed, and then even better when the pool heater went in.  There were many highlights with numerous friends over the years, but the best memories were during turtle season, when she and Steve had turtles lay eggs right in front of the house (one night a large turtle made a wrong turn and fell into the pool); and then later, sitting on the beach in the early evening and watching the baby turtles emerge from the nest and make it to the water.  Ingrid was well-known for the gourmet dinners she created and equally well-known for her knitting skills.  Many Akumalians count themselves lucky to have been a recipient of  colorful socks that Ingrid knitted; she even had  her own design for flip flop socks.  Friday evenings Ingrid and Steve could be seen at the Beach Bar, and then they made their way to the various restaurants in Akumal, but a particular favorite for Ingrid were the wonderful dinners for two at Hechizo.

As everything, life in “paradise” ended in early 2014, when Ingrid moved to Harwich, Cape Cod, MA, which was long overdue, with regards to the family.  It was bitter sweet, leaving Akumal behind on one hand, but then returning to civilization with family, culture, theater, many restaurants, and a good medical community within easy reach on the other.  Unfortunately, despite all the tests, diagnostics, tremendous care and attention in Boston, nothing conclusive about her illness was ever found!

Ingrid is being cremated: there is no wake, funeral, or service, other than a small celebratory dinner with the immediate family.  The family has stated that there is no need for flowers or donations, just your warm thoughts and memories of one of Akumal’s own.
